Nissan Motors launched its much-awaited, low-cost, economical car on Friday, with intentions of selling over 1 million units per year by 2013 and becoming a major force in the fast growing eco-car industry.

Bangkok, the 12^th of March 2010 [PDN]: The 1,200cc compact car, called “March” in most of Asia and “Micra” in India, Europe and other markets is being marketed for between 375,000 – 537,000 baht. This is approximately 20% cheaper than their competitor’s equivalents.

At the “March” global launch, Nissan Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga announced that the new brand would be sold in more the 160 countries, with Thailand, China, India and Mexico being the 4 main manufacturing and export hubs. Nissan Motors Thailand will commence production on April 1^st, producing an estimated 90,000 unit of which 70,000 are due for export. The introduction of the “March” into the Thai market, will effectively double Nissans vehicle output in the Kingdom to 200,000 units per year.

The “March” is being hailed as the Japanese car maker’s most important model in years, the culmination of an extensive research program designed to build a cost effective, safe, reliable and economical car for production and sale in low-cost countries. As such, Nissan has become the first of six global car makers to have obtained the generous incentives package on offer from the Thai government under the kingdoms “Eco-Car Project” scheme.

The “Eco-Car Project” offers car manufactures significant corporate tax exemptions for at least five years, providing production reaches 100,000 units per year within the five years. According to the state-run Thai Board of Investment the qualifications for the incentives package require the manufacturer to produce “Eco-Cars” which meet safety and “EURO 4” emission standards as well as having low fuel consumption. In addition, cuts of up to 90% will be gained on car-part imports by qualifying manufacturers providing that the part is not already being made by local producers.
